What is Pilates?
Praised by athletes, dancers, celebrities and physical rehabilitation clients the world over, Pilates is a physical fitness system designed to build strength, flexibility and lean muscle tone, with a focus on the "core".
Developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, it was originally designed to improve the rehabilitation program for WWI casualties, by training them to regain their health through strengthening, stretching and stabilising key muscles.
Since this time, Pilates has transformed to become one of the most loved forms of exercise worldwide, for it's ability to not only build strength, but to lengthen the body and align the spine (rather than bulking and shortening muscles).
Pilates focusses on your core, which can be considered the "powerhouse" of your body. Because of this core focus, Pilates is popular with not only those in the fitness industry or participants looking to shape up and look great, but also in rehabilitation. Pilates will especially assist those with back, neck and joint pain, and assist in recovery from specific injuries.
